>Sewage Spill at Estuary

>A sewage pipe found broken in the Estuary on 2 February near the Mt Pleasant/Main Road area has meant swimming in the Estuary and on Sumner beach is not advised. The Council has warned residents to stay out of the Estuary and nearby beaches, particularly Sumner, Scarborough and South Brighton, and to avoid eating seafood from those areas until water quality testing has been completed. The Christchurch earthquake was said to have caused the pipe to break in two places.

After 10 years of planning the Ferrymead Bridge strengthening and widening project is underway. The bridge is extremely valuable to Christchurch residents as it carries approximately 30,000 vehicles per day, as well as taking water, waste, power and phone lines to the eastern suburbs.
