Mount Pleasant Community Centre

Centre closed down due to quake damage

Mt Pleasant Community Centre, which was established as a War Memorial Hall in partnership between the Government, Christchurch City Council and the Mt Pleasant Community in 1954 was destroyed by the 6.3 earthquake which struck Christchurch on 22 February 2011. The epicentre was located approximately 2 kms from Mt Pleasant.

The Association, working closely with the community, is undertaking a process of understanding what the current and future needs of the community are to enable us to plan for a more sustainable, coherent and friendly neighbourhood. A group of local architects and planners have studied our suburb and noted that our facilities and road connections are not conducive to providing a village type setting. Working with these shortfalls in mind it is the Association’s aim that when we rebuild the centre it will become the heart of a bustling and dynamic community.

Over the next 12 months residents will be invited regularly to participate in the process of determining exactly the type of building we need. Meanwhile we have purchased a temporary building so we have a place to gather. This will be sited at the McCormacks Bay reserve adjacent to our old car park and will be a great community space for the next couple of years while we wait for our centre to be rebuilt.
