Christchurch Coastal Pathway Project

The Christchurch Coastal Pathway Project

The Coastal Pathway project is about establishing a safe, accessible, scenic pathway along the water’s edge from Scarbrough Beach to Ferrymead Bridge, and ultimately onwards into our city’s centre. The earthquakes have offered the opportunity to rethink the land/waters edge to include a memorial pathway offering access to wetland, coastline, beach, hills and villages.

The benefits

  • Provision of pathway for all types of healthy, physical activities e.g. walking, running, skating, skateboarding, cycling and many more.
  • Improved landscaping/restoration of estuary edge
  • Provision of new public space essential to community earthquake recovery
  • Enhanced access to the estuary’s edge.
  • Provision of shared cultural space for coastal communities. A place to meet (propinquity), link markets/art exhibitions etc.
  • Cultural/historical space to tell our stories
  • Provides eastern coastal communities with a safe route for children traveling to school.
  • Enhance the area’s identity as an outdoors, family oriented place for all to enjoy
  • Improve access to beaches/hills for all Christchurchpeople and for the disabled
  • A major tourism asset for the city
  • Potential link to Te Araroa – the NZ National Walkway network
  • Aligns with sustainability vision of CCC
  • Functional link to new cycle friendly CBD
  • Job creation
  • Community-led project to rebuild morale in devastated communities
